The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠, Chén Jiā Cí) was set up by two Chinese-Americans who wanted students from the Chen family to have an academy in Guangzhou as they were preparing for their Confucian Imperial Examinations. It was built just before the end of the Qing era between 1890 and 1894, with the two founders whose surname was Chen, Chen Ruinan and Chen Zhaonan, rallying support from all over Guangdong. It was originally a space for students training for the Confucian Imperial Examinations, built by two overseas Chinese in America returning to Guangzhou.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was constructed between 1890 and 1894 during the Qing Dynasty. It was funded by the Chen clan, a prominent family in Guangdong, as a place for clan members to study and prepare for imperial examinations. The hall also served as a place of ancestral worship and clan gatherings. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, it was used as a school and later converted into a museum showcasing Guangdong folk art and crafts. The complex is north to south in symmetry conforming to traditional Chinese architecture, comprising 19 buildings such as halls and courtyards with two of the courtyards having served as two main buildings.

Initially built in 1894 during the Qing dynasty, the ancestral hall was constructed by the 72 Chen clans for their juniors’ accommodation and preparation for the imperial examinations. However, its purpose evolved over the years, and it became an educational institution for the Chen family. Eventually, the complex became a public space for local gatherings and functions. Covering 13,200 square meters, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall consists of 19 buildings with nine halls and six courtyards. Buildings are separated with “Qingyun alleys” and connected with corridors.
This academy adopted all of the best materials, which took a large amount of money. Once stepping into the hall, every part of the academy tells you a story about a big family, even about the past of Guangzhou.
