JHA Employment, Training Program Celebrates new Graduates

The Johnstown Housing Authority’s Employment and Training Program celebrated eight graduates of the program’s second cohort who entered a new phase of life Friday.

The ceremony at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College in Richland Township marked a clean slate for the graduates, who are set to seek additional education or employment in the Johnstown location, said JHA Executive Director Mike Alberts.

For the past four months, those registered in the program completed courses provided by a collaboration among Penn Highlands, Johnstown Area Regional Industries and PA CareerLink.
The program consisted of courses supplied at Johnstown public housing community spaces to get rid of individuals’ transport barriers.
The curriculum consisted of dispute management, task search and interview skills, Microsoft Word and Excel, and employment life skills management, as well as school trip for a robotics bootcamp and tours of technology-based production companies consisting of Kitron and Compass Systems.
The event Friday celebrated the 8 graduates of the program while acknowledging lots more who registered, however opted out after discovering work or other further education chances along the way.

JARI Director of Workforce Development Dave Grimaldi said members of the program’s 2nd cohort have advanced to additional education at Penn Highlands or employment other location schools for certification in fields consisting of HVAC, emergency situation medicine and cybersecurity. The program was started by former JARI Workforce Development Director Debra Balog and
PA CareerLink Cambria County site administrator Jeff Dick.”This was one of the very best ideas we’ve had for finding quality employees for companies in the area,”Balog said.”We came up with the idea of working with our public real estate systems because lots of people had transportation and childcare barriers that kept them from accessing resources outside of Johnstown’s public real estate.” U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Pittsburgh Field Office Director Michael Horvath said the program has helped individuals”
lift themselves up and get them linked. “He praised the graduates and the partners who made the program possible. The program has actually earned HUD acknowledgment as a best practice, an acknowledgment provided to one authority every year for specifically improving the lives of its citizens, Alberts said. The graduates got certificates and a standing ovation from friends and family in presence, in addition to Cambria County Commissioner Thomas Chernisky, Cambria Regional Chamber of Commerce President Amy Bradley and agents from U.S. Sen. John Fetterman’s office. Fetterman, D-Pa., and former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey were critical in promoting the program, employment JARI President Linda Thomson said.
